If not, what does one need to fulfil during the graduate program to maximise their chances of getting a role?

Hi James, after completing the graduate scheme you are not guaranteed a position but you will have the opportunity to interview for the team/area you would like to join directly without going through the entire hiring process. I would suggest to learn as much as you can while in your graduate role so as to diversify and upskill your skills. Thanks

I would also suggest to build connections with the team in your placement rotations and maybe if you liked working in any of the teams, you can try to get a more permanent role there

So does that mean that candidates are encouraged to diversify as opposed to specialising in a particular area of Software engineering?

It depends on the individual graduate. If you have certain area you want to specialise in you can go for it and the scheme will support you through that as much as possible. It also gives a chance to diversify your knowledge and experience different areas if you're unsure what you which area you want to pursue in future.
