I would like to ask if graduates are given autonomy over their work and their own responsibility within projects or will the graduate scheme mostly consist of shadowing/learning about the role from others?

Yes, quite a bit. You are trusted with responsibilities as like other members of your team. You will be learning as you work as oppose to just shadowing, however wherever you need support it is readily available to you.
It's much different to .. work experience per se, because you are actually involved in outputs and deliverables
