From project manager in utilities to software engineer
I've studied Business Management with Economics and after graduation joined the water industry as a project manager. After a few years I've eventually got promoted and became a Catchment Lead, looking after underground assets (a fancier name for pipes) in the South Birmingham region.
I always had a passion for Technology though, and became a self-taught web developer, building some less complex websites as hobby projects. During the pandemic I've decided to pursue this area as a career and completed a bootcamp in Web Development and another one in Cyber Security.
Afterwards I've joined the Technology Engineering graduate scheme at Lloyds Banking Group where I am now working as a full-stack Software Engineer and have been working with a wide range of technologies, from creating Windows services in .NET to rebuilding GUIs in React.js.
I am a Graduate Software Engineer
Since I joined Lloyds Banking Group, I have been working with a wide range of technologies including:
- Building Windows Services in C# with .NET
- Building APIs and microservices using both REST and gRPC architectural patterns
- Rebuilding GUIs in React.js with Typescript
- Setting up CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins, using Docker, Kubernetes and Cloud infrastructure on both OCP and GCP.
The variety of work, and great energy and knowledge within the team
We have a wide range of backgrounds and knowledge within the team and the support has been amazing throughout my time on the Graduate Scheme. This helped me to learn new technologies quickly and enabled me to have a meaningful contribution in designing and developing new applications.
You can do it!
No matter what is your background, previous experience and education, there is a place for everyone in Technology if you stay curious and willing to learn new things.
I won a Hackathon on my second week at work
Right after joining Lloyds Banking Group we had the privilege of competing on one of the Reboot hackathons with a group of other graduates. Out of 25 hacking teams our team got shortlisted into the final 5 where we got to present to a panel of judges and then ended up winning!
The whole day was a great experience and what's more, everyone in our team was a new joiner!
