Operation Manager - Emerging Talent

Hello. Thanks for your question. I work in recruitment and not in the Software Engineering part of the business but I have a number of things that I do to manage a busy workload. First of all, prioritise and re-prioritise as necessary; don't be afraid to say no or ask for more time. Don't over-promise and ensure you manage expectations. Don't be afraid to ask for help and to delegate as appropriate. In most roles there will be times that you have to work for longer sometimes to support your colleagues and the customer.

Software Engineering Graduate

Hi there! One of the things I like most about my Software Engineering role is that I can be transparent with my Line Manager about how much I can reasonably take on. I have daily meetings with my team where we organise what work we do each day, so I can be flexible about how much I do across the week. My team and Line Manager have been very understanding of all the training, inductions, and other activities I have to do, so I feel able to tell them what I have on my plate and then take on the right amount of work for me. There are lots of great opportunities to get involved with, even at the start of your graduate scheme, so is important to have a system to stay on top of all the work. I like to use a mixture of personal weekly planning sheets as well as my team's online work planning board. Then, at the end of the week, I self reflect and chat with my Line Manager about how the week has gone, and over time I am finding the best work balance for me.
