Like me, you do not hold a Computer Science or related degree. Have you encountered any specific challenges due to this?
Additional information
I had to cut the question down a bit to fit within the character limit, but I believe it still makes sense. Like you, I do not hold a computer science or related degree (I have a business degree), and have applied for the Software Engineering Graduate Scheme as computing is a passion of mine and something that I wish I'd pursued earlier. I am really excited about the opportunity, but one of the things I have some concerns about is how much I will need to know when starting on the scheme, and also wondered if you could advise on whether there are certain things that you think I should 100% understand before starting? Thanks so much.

Hi Jake, great to hear that you have a passion for computing, as that is the main key to success! Like you, I come from a non-programming degree, with most of my experience coming from programming for fun during lockdown. I have found that everyone has been very appreciative of the different perspective I bring to the team, and I have felt supported in getting my technical knowledge up to speed.
In terms of challenges, I have had to learn a lot very quickly as everything is much newer to me than those who read computer science at university. However, I have felt well supported by my team, Line Manager, Grad Coordinators, and other graduates on the scheme, as well as having access to lots of self-learning materials and taught certifications/boot camps. Many of the graduates are from non-computer science and even non- technical degrees, so do not worry as there is lots of support for you once you join and understanding that not everyone has the same technical knowledge yet.
The biggest challenge for me is that there is always so much to learn, so it can be difficult to figure out what to focus on. I have found success in following my interests and curiosity, talking to my Line Manager for advice, and saying yes to as many hands on opportunities for technical growth as I can. It can be a challenge, but I promise you it is a fun one!
Before starting the application process, it is important to know that there is a programming test, so an understanding of at least one programming language is needed. Other than that, keep on pursing your computing passion and program some cool things, as that will ultimately give you the experience and curiosity you need to succeed in the graduate scheme!
Good luck with the application!
